A note for the reader: Before this newsletter moved to Substack it was an email thread between friends. I’m posting the previous emails here for completeness, and so that if I invoke a previous comment readers can refer to them.
Good afternoon!
This week was a bit of a doozy — so thanks to everyone who sent me things to read and share, but I have not gotten to all of them (will ASAP)! (1) and (6) below come with thanks to Benedict Brady.
1) Economy: The debt is alright
2) History/Culture: On Granagerization, some of the earliest fan-fic/vision-boards/collages
3) SCOTUS: What Ramos V. Louisiana tells us about the state of the court
4) COVID: Looking at where cases are rising or falling based on proportion of tests with positive results
5) Economics: What grows the economy? Mostly firms iterating over their old offerings
6) Fun: Front-month futures on crude oil went negative on Monday, meaning that storage and demand were in such short supply that people were willing to pay to have oil taken off their hands come Tuesday. So what would it be like to buy some crude and profit off the difference?
7) Fun/Life in the time of COVID: A love story; I’m not crying, you are.
8) Housing Market: As many people on this thread know, I’ve got a little bit of beef with the 30-year fixed amortizing mortgage. Some folks are trying different arrangements
9) Fun: More on the weird world beneath the waves
10) Thoughtful: Another way of thinking about the the most important question we all face: how to spend the time you have left
Recommendation: Caroline and I did a yoga class via Down Dog, an iOS app that was surprisingly well-developed and has free premium features through the end of the month. While I won’t be able to speak to how good of a value it is (I don’t know what the monthly rate is), it definitely is worth the download to do a class or two this week. Gotta stay limber after hunching over your computer all week at your non-ergonomic kitchen table.

Harrison
